Garden and Orchard: Blain, Chloe and I checked on the plum trees yesterday and the tree on the far right in front of the rock pile was ripe for picking! I picked all I could from the ground then climbed up into the tree to get the high stuff. I need to remember to wear long sleeves next time. We picked 3 1/4 lbs of yellow little plums. Once I get to the store to pick up some canning lids I should have enough to do a batch. I also picked about half a bucket full of wind fall apples for the pigs which they loved.
Showing off our bounty
As I look around at all the other gardens I realize everyone else must have planted at least 2 weeks earlier than I did. Their plants look a lot bigger than mine and most people seem to be getting warm weather veggies already. Ours are coming along slow but we still have another month or so before the frost comes so I hope they keep on growing! Our biggest pumpkin is pictured above :)
Hidden cucumber
Tiny watermelon ball - I want to start all these indoors about 2 weeks before the last spring frost and then plant outside earlier than I did this year. Lots to learn about growing here in Heber!
The tomatoes are starting to turn RED finally! We ate our first one on hamburgers at Em's house. They are pretty small but taste delicious!
Kale has bounced back nicely after getting munched on by deer pretty heavily. The peas are also making a come back with little clusters here and there along the trellis. Nate worked on the fencing all day yesterday and got quite a bit done. I'm so lucky to have such a hard working husband who knows how to do all these homestead projects.
We are also trying to warm Betty up to us by bringing her grain every morning when we feed the pigs. Three days of this has her coming out of the pasture in the morning to meet me at their pen. I give her the grain in the empty pig bucket then brush her down while she eats. Her halter is off so we need a way to catch her and get it back on. That and it would also be nice not to chase her around everytime we want milk :)
The pigs are getting big, maybe around 100 lbs for the bigger one. Still no escapes and they are loving all the weeds, scraps and ear scratches they get! Having these two make me even more excited to get the Guinea Hogs in the spring. It will be nice to have a breeding pair that get to have names and that I can get a little more attached to while still providing us with food. I think pigs are so much fun and I love that they really do eat everything.
Preschool for Chloe: We went and met Chloe's teacher today for the first time. She starts her first day of preschool on Thursday and is really excited. We enrolled her in Sunshine circle and so far are very impressed with the place. The teachers have all been really nice and it seems like she will have a good time while learning a lot.
