Barnyard and Babies

Betty: We are going to "pretend" that Betty is pregnant so that means we need to tame her down a bit. Either way it can't hurt if someone else has her or we keep her. I've been putting her tiny morsel of grain in the bucket and making her go in the stall to eat it. I then brush her and "pretend" to milk, mostly just getting her used to having her udder touched. She backs up sometimes and has kicked a little bit, but nothing extreme. I'm hopeful she can be tamed enough to milk if it ever happens.
She goes a little crazy for the grain, running up to me, spinning, tossing her head etc. but calms down once she is eating. Oh why do I have such a crazy cow??

Food: I was out of dinner ideas a bit ago so I just went out to the garden and picked whatever was ripe, and collected eggs to hard boil for dinner. It actually turned out better than expected because we had a ripe cucumber, tomatoes, kale, lots of broccoli shoots, a couple peas and a little tiny cauliflower head. Minus the ranch dressing it was totally home grown!
We have lots of little cucumbers and I just noticed two butternut squashes. The three pumpkins continue to grow and I'm so happy we are finally getting tomatoes - just the little ones and we get about 2 every other day. I will take anything at this point so it all just makes me happy when I can go out and harvest! Better late than never.

Plums: On Saturday I picked the tree behind the hay stalls and came up with no less than 20 pounds of little yellow plums! I was out there in the wind for 2 solid hours, using the tall ladder and even leaving some on the tree which weren't quite ripe. It really didn't seem like that much when I looked at the tree but I just kept filling the little white basket and 20 pounds later I was done. I froze them all in gallon bags but I'm getting more anxious to turn them into jam.
I am looking into getting a fruit strainer so I don't have to pit and peel them which would be next to impossible. We'll see how it goes.
I also picked the tree of reddish purple plums behind the shed today and got 1 1/4 lbs. They are the best tasting and have the juiciest consistency. I kept those for fresh eating :)

Fencing: Nate made so much progress this last week on the garden fence! The bottom is completely fenced in and he has most of the support posts in a well that he will use to put up the top wires.
Drilling holes for the little support poles

This little Piggy: We have now had 2 escapes from our not so little piggies. The first time they lifted the gate off it's hinges and the second only the girl got out under the part that meets the stall. Nate has reinforced their pen but we are going to let them out after securing the green gate and staking the rest of the cages around the fruit trees.
It was so cute to see them out in the barnyard running and jumping. They were super easy to get back in their pen too, just a little bit of grain in their bucket and they followed me right in. I hand measured the big one this time and calculate him to be about 120 lbs or so. I really should just get a little tape measure so I can be more accurate. One of these days.

The ABC's:
Avenlea is a champion when it comes to eating, there is yet to be a meal she hasn't eaten - especially spaghetti, beans, eggs, yogurt and oatmeal. She walks everywhere, even over blankets, around chairs, and can slide off the couch and down the porch step safely. She loves to play with the empty milk cartons and carry around Chloe's little baby dolls.
Chloe has now completed 2 days of preschool and has already learned to write her name using lower case letters and is very excited for her turn to be special leader next week. She loves to sing all the Frozen songs, especially Let it Go. She has been such a sweet big sister to Blain today, getting him his blanket and rubbing his tummy for him. Chloe gets toys for Avenlea and tries really hard to incorporate her in her games and play.
Poor Blain is sick today. He has already taken a 2 hour nap and has been resting on the couch most of the day. He has a fever of 101 that has been off and on today. I let him watch Dragons and Frozen because his stomach hurts too much to play and it's sad to see him just laying there on the couch doing nothing :( The one good thing is he looks forward to his medicine. Feel Better Blain!
