Nate's Spring break has been nice and it's great having him home all day. We worked outside the whole week, getting fences taken down and put up on his end and digging and planting on mine. We are both tired and sore but Nate should finish the bigger area for Betty today (fingers crossed) and I should be able to plant the cool weather veggies today too (if Avenlea takes another nap).
Betty: Meet my little cow who is NOT pregnant. :( We took her to the vet on Wednesday and he says she looks good but not pregnant and maybe not even cycling (?) I've done a little research and we might look into getting her a shot that will make her come into heat before we take her over to the bull next week.
My dreams of milk just took a backseat for about another year. Disappointed to put it mildly.
Allergies: My little Chloe woke up Monday morning and she comes into my room and tells me she can't open her eyes. Confused I ask her why and she says because she was reading books in bed last night. I smiled and helped her get into my bed. Then I realized that her eyes really were very swollen and her whole face red and swollen as well. She kept saying all day that her face was tight but didn't complain about it.
Poor swollen face
Nate got her some childrens allergy medicine and we came to the conclusion that she must be allergic to almonds on some level. She's definitely had almonds before but she ate A LOT of almonds at Em's house last Sunday (they were chocolate covered). The swelling slowly went down during the day and the redness was all the way gone by mid Thursday. The tiny blister pockets on her face left her skin dry and peeling but that is mostly gone now too.We will be watching her with tree nuts from now on.
Hard to see but this is her today with the new red marks on her face, and a pocket full of flowers for mommy. What a sweetheart.
Then today Chloe woke up with some red blotches on her face and looking her over I found a huge rash/hives on the upper part of her abdomen. It is raised and bumpy and rough. Nate and I have been going over and over everything she ate and can't come up with anything new or excessive (like last time). It's so weird that she would have two reactions in the same week when she hasn't had any allergies in the past. I'm gonna talk to Doctor Dave about it next week.
The Garden: Like I said before I've been digging the grass out of the garden spot with every spare minute I have while Avenlea sleeps. Chloe helped me get all the seeds ready but unfortunately they still aren't in the ground.
I'm gonna plant beets, radishes, spinach, lettuce, carrots, onions, and kale. I'm also hardening off my biggest broccoli starts so they can go in the ground next week.
The peas took 2 whole weeks to pop up but we have lots of little sprouts coming through today! I put in a second planting on Friday, hopefully these ones will come up faster!
Yay I got my first planting of spring veggies in the ground. I finished up right around 8:30pm when the light was finally fading. The row cover only covered half the section so I'll have to work on getting the rest of it covered next week
Blainito helping on the farm
This little guy may be the best sleeper ever. Last night at Em's he asked uncle Sam for his blanket and then proceeded to put himself to bed because he was sleepy. He crawled into bed and didn't wake up until 7:30 the next morning. When I went in to put Chloe to bed he was sleeping like a little angel curled up on the bed. Love you Blain!
Teeth: Avenlea is cutting her first teeth. she was feverish last Sunday through Wednesday and didn't eat very well those days either. Her little teeth haven't come through yet but I can see where they are about to pop out. She seems happier today but still has plenty of drool to let me know she's not done.
Avenlea's eyes have also seemed a little better lately and haven't been glued shut in over a week!
