The Orchard begins

Mail order Trees: Nate got an email last Monday saying the trees we ordered from St. Lawrence Nursery were on their way... and we did not have a single hole dug! Needless to say that's what we've been doing all week. Nate and I worked hard Monday through Wednesday to dig as many holes as fast as we could. They are about 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep, and they were all filled with rocks. Some had tons of medium and small rocks, some had giant boulders that were too heavy for me to lift. It took about 45 minutes on average per hole, and we had to have 14 done.
Nate got a nice surprise in the mail for his birthday Thursday in the form of 6 fruit trees and 8 nut trees. I got 2 of them planted on Thursday before he got home, and we finished up Friday and Saturday with the remaining 4 fruit trees. Dad and Peggy helped us wrap and cage them last night which saved us a bunch of time. Nate used concrete reinforcement mesh, which is really sturdy, and we did the little wrap with hardware cloth. Can't wait for them to grow big and give us tasty fruit!
We still have to plant all the nut trees and figure out how to water them back there regularly. It is so much more work to plant trees than I ever imagined. We are dead tired and physically exhausted having spent every spare moment outside working to get those trees in. We also want to take a trip up to Ogden on Saturday to pick up the remaining 7 trees, which means digging 7 more holes this week on top of planting the nut trees. We'll see if it happens.

Roosters: Well the count is in and we have a grand total of 5 roosters, and we only ordered 1. One of our Maran roosters was practicing his crowing this morning (I stayed to figure out who it was after letting them out) and the others we can tell by their big combs. I don't know what we're gonna do with them all because we don't have the facilities to separate them from the rest of the flock, but I don't want fighting among them either. Most sites say you can butcher around 20 weeks if they are a big breed. Guess I'll get out the scale again and try to see how much they are weighing these days.

Thank goodness rainbow turned out to be a girl!
They are really starting to venture out in the pasture area, they love the wood pile by the shed, and I even found nicknack in the old coop!
My favorite rooster - he herds the chickens in to the coop at night, chases away magpies, and runs to me whenever I come outside. I'd say he's winning the race in who gets to stay in my book. As a meatie we hope he would make nice big chicks who also grow fast if we keep him for breeding. I would also like to keep a Maran because then we get Olive Eggers from the Americaunas if we ever hatch chicks. Decisions decisions.

My new job! I finished my training at Rocky Mountain Care Center in Heber and have done one shift on my own now, all nights. It is hard to be up all night when I don't get a lot of sleep to begin with but I'd take it any day over the drive to SLC. I will be working one or two shifts a week in May and then go down to once a week from then on, either days or nights whichever they need.

Em was nice enough to come up on Nate's birthday after my 2nd night so I could get some sleep. I'm still working on finding a babysitter for times when Em can't come up and I don't work a Friday or Saturday and Daddy can be with the babies so I can rest in the morning.

Happy Birthday Nate: Nate's 33rd birthday was a little rushed because of the arrival of the trees, but I think we still found a way to make it special. We also had our first frisbee game of the season so we drove down to Orem to play a double header. Sam bought him Arby's and Em & Theron bought him the big chocolate cake from Costco, per his request. I got him some work gloves and we will be going shopping for some "dress" cowboy boots, pictures to come of my cowboy :) Theron put sparklers as candles on his cake so that was also fun. Molly and Johnny came down too so there was lots of family to help him celebrate.
